Out
West to Outback and Beyond
American
cowboy poetry and Australian bush poetry are oral traditions that have existed
for well over a hundred years. On the frontier and in the outback, where
newspapers were scarce, books were a luxury and most communication was by word
of mouth, the storyteller was the main source of edification and
entertainment. Rhythmic, rhymed poetry was easier to remember than prose,
and its hypnotic cadence engrossed many an audience around campfires, in
shearing sheds and bunkhouses. Modern day minstrels of poetry continue to
engage and amuse gatherings of people with this ancient art form. Nearly
all of the poems in this book have been memorized and performed in precisely
this fashion. The purpose of this compilation is to encourage the sharing
of poetry and to promote the magic of the spoken word.
The
selections in this book are representative of the poems the author, Dick
Warwick has created during the past fifteen years. They are in
traditional rhyme and meter, the style in which most “cowboy poetry” is
written. Some of the subject matter is, however, beyond the usual bounds
of the genre—some more closely resembling Australian “bush” or outback poetry
and some that fits neither category. Hence the three distinct sections in
the contents of this volume.
